Soil:
You can prepare your beds by adding 2-3" of organic material such as "Back to Nature" or "Lady Bug Blended Compost"  then till your soil 8-10" deep.

Containers -
Many gardeners profess having the best success when growing tomatoes in  containers. The advantages are better control of soil type, watering and drainage. It is also easier to monitor for possible disease and insect infestations.   We carry large "nursery' containers or patio containers !!

Square Foot Gardening -  We carry everything you will need for Square Foot Gardening !!

Provide Sun:  Both Tomatoes and Peppers need at least 6 hours of sun.

Planting Time:  They need warmer soils to grow.  Plant after all danger of cold weather is past - see our Spring Planting Guide.   If you plant earlier - you may have to cover small tender plants.

Varieties:  Twin Oaks Nursery carries a huge variety of Tomatoes & Peppers.  Plan your garden early, or choose a new variety -  see all the varieties, sizes, & maturity days !!

Give them room to grow:  Tomatoes need at least 18" between plants ... 2 feet is preferable

Giving Support:  Tomatoes need support to keep the leaves, and fruit from laying on the soil.

Fertilize:  Use a Garden Fertilizer, or Tomato & Pepper Food.   Also there research that shows using Epsom Salt will prevent Blossom End Rot -  Ask for a copy of the information next time you are in the Nursery !!!

Water Consistently:  Make sure your soild don't dry out.  If the soil dries out around your tomato plants it may cause Blossom End Rot, and other problems with the tomatoes.

.
Determinate Tomato Plants:
Also Called "Bush" Tomatoes grow to a fixed size, and ripen all their fruit in a short period, usually about 2 weeks.  Once this first flush of fruit has ripened, the plant will begin to diminish in vigor and will set little to no new fruit.    Determinate Tomatoes make sense when you want a large amount of tomatoes all at one time to make tomato sauce, or to can ..... or if you have a smaller space such as growing in a container.

Indetermiante Tomato Plants:  Called "Vining" Tomatoes will grow and produce fruit until killed by frost.  They can reach heights up to 8-10' tall, and need caging for suport.  They will bloom, and set new fruit throughout the growing season.
